Sunday June 7th, 2020

Sharjah, 6 June 2020: A new milestone was marked by Sharjah Airport as it received the “Green Airport” Silver recognition 2020, which acknowledges airports’ achievements in environmental projects. Within the preservation of the environment program issued by the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific region, this accreditation is a testament to Sharjah Airport’s innovative advances in the field of water management and recycling. The appreciation shield was presented to His Excellency Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority from the (ACI) Asia-Pacific region.

The recognition reflects the Airport’s efforts and keenness to apply the highest standards of sustainability in line with the Emirates Green Development Strategy.

Sharjah Airport succeeded in enhancing its environmentally friendly operations by designing a new sewage treatment plant (STP), which was included in the list of credits because it adopts the latest environmentally friendly technologies with a high capacity to treat large quantities of sewage without leaving any environmental impact.

Green initiatives
His Excellency Ali Salim Al Midfa, said:” Sharjah Airport’s accreditation from the Airports Council International is a reflection of its continuous efforts to preserve the environment by adopting many green initiatives and programs, in line with the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda”.

Sustainability is the main priority for Sharjah Airport which has innovatively enhanced its operations by adopting an environmentally-responsible strategy to reduce resource consumption, reuse and recycle.

The airport’s green initiatives include strict control over the consumption of electricity and water, as well as the implementation of an integrated waste management system which support the long-term sustainable development goals of the airport.

International standards
“One important lesson that we are learning from the current challenging time is that addressing the health and safety of people includes contributing to create new societal value for the communities we serve. We applaud Sharjah Airport’s environmentally-responsible approach to its airport expansion plans. By adopting environmentally-efficient technology into its sewage treatment plant, higher volumes of sewage water can be treated with less impact on the environment,” said Stefano Baronci, Director General, ACI Asia-Pacific. “The project is deserving of silver recognition in the Green Airports Recognition programme.”

Environmental Awards
Sharjah Airport was recognised by several entities for its contribution to sustainable initiatives. These include the Sharjah Green Award in 2019 from Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and The Modama Award in 2019 for Green Government Initiatives from Ajman Tourism Department. Sharjah Airport also accomplished Airport carbon accreditation – level 1 mapping, level 2 reduction and level 3 optimization by Airport Council International till 2018. All these recognitions and awards celebrate Sharjah Airport’s pioneering environmental and sustainability initiatives in the UAE aviation industry.

The Green Airports Recognition was established by ACI Asia-Pacific. The aim is to promote best practices to minimise aviation’s impact on the environment and to recognize ACI Asia-Pacific airport members, and their outstanding contribution to eco-friendly airport construction, operations and maintenance.
