Sharjah, 14 April 2016: Air India Express, India’s first international budget airline, has expanded its operations to Sharjah in summer 2016 by introducing daily flights from Sharjah to Mumbai effective 9th of April 2016.A function held at Sharjah International Airport to celebrate the official inaugural flights from Sharjah to Mumbai was attended by HE Sheikh Khalid Bin Issam Al Qassimi, Chairman of Department of Civil Aviation, HE Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, Sheikh Faisal Bin Saud Al Qassimi, Director of Sharjah Airport Authority and Mr Melvin DeSilva, Regional Manager – Gulf, Middle East & Africa -Air India ,in addition to other airport officials and Air India Express senior managers.HE Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority stated:” We wish Air India Express all the best in their new step which will provide additional choices to the subcontinent bound travelers. Also, this will enhance the strong relationship between two countries”.HE Sheikh Faisal Bin Saud Al Qassimi, Director of Sharjah Airport Authority, said:” Sharjah International Airport is growing and attracting more airlines. Even the existing companies expand their businesses, thanks to the airport’s efficiency of operations, making it easier for the company to serve its customers in the region”.Mr Melvin DeSilva, Regional Manager – Gulf, Middle East & Africa, said:” We thank Sharjah Airport Authority and the Department of Civil Aviation Authority – Sharjah for their support and facilitating our operations through the airport. With the introduction of these services, Air India Express is now operating a total of 27 services week from Sharjah – 7 each to Mumbai, Cochin and Calicut and 3 each to Varanasi and Trivandrum. In addition, Air India, the parent company of Air India Express also operates 14 services per week from Sharjah – 7 each to Cochin and Calicut, taking the total operations by the Air India group from Sharjah to 41 services per week to 4 destinations in India.
