Sharjah International Airport achieves Airport carbon accreditation from ACI

Second Carbon Accredited Airport in the regionSharjah International Airport has achieved the Airport Carbon Accreditation from Airport Council International (ACI), making it the second- certified airport in the region.

The airport achieved this accreditation in the framework of its sustained efforts to preserve the environment, and after adopting many of the green initiatives and programs, in line with the commitment to the criteria set forth in the Certificate of Quality in environmental management ISO14001, which also seeks to develop quality measures of health and public safety, as in OHSAS 18001, and adopt best international standards to preserve the environment through the latest internationally accredited programs. The airport received accreditation by identifying and measuring the emission sources within the direct operations at the airport that can be controlled such as emissions from ground equipments movements and the use of electricity, according to the criteria stipulated by the greenhouse gas Protocol .

HE Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, said: “We are proud to be the second airport in the region to start playing our part in addressing aviation’s impact on climate change. A key milestone for us is the participation in Airport Carbon Accreditation. The certification recognizes Sharjah International airport’s efforts towards applying comprehensive carbon management in the airport. This application also demonstrates its commitment towards developing a sustainable future in aviation and effectively managing the environmental impacts of our operations at the airport.”He added: ”At Sharjah International Airport, as a part of our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), we understand the importance of reducing green house Gas emission and the need of a sustainable operational model that adapts to environmental friendly operational strategies that ensure a reduction in total carbon footprint created by our operation.”.

He further said: In the process of developing and maintaining the quality standards with ISO 9001, and quality in Environmental Management System which is certified ISO14001, and in our endeavor to develop quality in Public Health and Safety Procedures of OHSAS 18001, we will adopt the Airport Carbon Accreditation, which is certified by ACI, renowned for adopting the best international standards to preserve the environment.”

The accreditation demonstrated the airport’s strong commitment to carbon reduction and I look forward to seeing the airport’s future achievements on its journey towards carbon neutrality.”Airport Carbon Accreditation hast four Levels of carbon Accreditation, (Level-1 Mapping, Level-2 Reduction, Level-3 Optimisation and Level-4 Neutrality).
