Ruler of Sharjah Inaugurates Sharjah International Airport’s New Runway4060 meters in length, built at a cost of AED 500 million

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, this morning inaugurated the new Runway of Sharjah International Airport.The first flight on the new runway was by the Ruler’s aircraft with His Highness and senior dignitaries on board.

The visit comes within the framework of his His Highness commitment to follow up on vital infrastructure projects for the Emirate of Sharjah, reflecting the growth of the emirate, as well as incentivizing the business community and the public to avail themselves of state-of-the-art facilities.   Their Highnesses were accompanied byH.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Chairman of Urban Planning Council of Sharjah, H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Isam Al Qassimi, Chairman – Department of Civil Aviation,H.E. Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman – Sharjah Airport Authority, Sheikh Faisal bin Saoud Al Qassimi, Director Operations of Civil Aviation, Mr. Greg McIntyre, GlobalOperations Director of CH2MHILL Halcrow, along with other dignitaries.

During his visit, His Highness was briefed by the Airport senior officials about the new project, where the runway has a length of 4,060m and a width of 60m, and willallow for unrestricted operations of the largest aircraft including Airbus A380, Boeing 747-800, and Antonov 225 type aircraft. Eight new link taxiways and two high-speed runway exits were constructed as part of the same project. These additions will increase the connectivity between the runway, passenger terminal, and cargo apronsand also improve the efficiency of the fuel burn of aircraft on ground from touch down to the apron stands.

The new runway is also equipped with modern aeronautical lighting and airfield systems, which will increase safety standards and allow operations in reduced levels of visibility (CAT II). The new infrastructure has built-in allowances for equipment to be easily upgraded to allow operations during low levels of visibility (CAT IIIB) in the future.

A new Air Tower Control was established with the latest air navigation and air control systems, for emergency situations to ensure the smooth and continued air operationsat Sharjah International Airport.

On this occasion, H.E. Sheikh Khalid bin Isam Al Qassimi, said: “We are grateful for the presence of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member ofthe Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and for inaugurating the new runway, which is an important milestone for Sharjah International Airport, the Emirate of Sharjah in particular and the United Arab Emirates as a whole.

H.E. pointed out that the new runway was developed in accordance with world-class capabilities enabling it to accommodate all types of modern passenger and freightaircraft.  It also features the latest equipment and technology to ensure that it is operated within the highest safety and security measures. The Department of CivilAviation has further ensured that all matters related to the operations of this project, along with close coordination of the General Civil Aviation Authority, complywith the highest international standards.

H.E. Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority was quoted: “The implementation of this project comes within the framework of the development plan taking place in Sharjah International Airport under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi.  The development at the Airport is a continuous process aimed at meeting the growth in the aviation sector with regards to passenger numbers, aircraft movements and freight, in line with the expectations for the future.

The new runway, which was completed in two years at a total cost of 500 million Dirhams will enhance passenger and cargo capacity, reinforcing Sharjah Airport’s role as a gateway to the Emirate of Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates.

Halcrow (a CH2M HILL Company), a global engineering consultancy with over 50 years of experience in the Emirate of Sharjah, delivered the design and supervision,with Lane-NCTC as the main contractor.

The excellent collaboration between Sharjah Airport Authority, Department of Civil Aviation, and the General Civil Aviation Authority enabled the project to be implementedin a smooth manner without any disruption to existing flight operations.

The new runway project came about in response to the growing demand from international carriers whose flights continue to increase into Sharjah.  In addition to this isthe ongoing growth in the fleet and routes of Sharjah’s home carrier airarabia.

Statistics for Sharjah International Airport over the last few years indicate double digit growth in numbers of passengers handles and flight movement – as depicted inthe attached graphs.
